Microsoft are about to pre release windows 7, bearing in mind the joys of vista (please note sarcasm)

Will you be rushing out to the stores to buy it or would it be better just to dust off your copy of XP and reinstall it (the last windows operating system that actually worked).

And on a serious note, govt depts and companies usually run out and by these O.S when they are released (My usual job is project management for migration and deployments, so have lots of experience in this).

Should they be banned from spending more money especially when these projects always go well over budget and cause a multitude of problems

Myself and a friend have removed Vista and gone back to XP. Vista was no more than an expensive service pack in my opinion.

My experience of Govt depts, local authorities and other public authorities is that they are very slow to upgrade to any new platform. Mostly because of the huge amounts of due diligence, bureaucracy and overly sensitive risk management.

I have never come across a dept running Vista. Very recently it took me months of campaigning and project work to put through a proposal to upgrade to XP sp3, a year after launch. I still know of 1 dept running 95 as there PC platform.

I am quite impressed that you are working with depts that have upgraded to Vista...maybe a little worried as well.

As a fellow PM I always recommend waiting until SP1 has been released on any platform or MS software before a role out.

Supposedly windows 7 is a working version of Vista which Microsoft have had to rushed out.

Have a go at Linux, its getting better all the time, Ubuntu is better than Vista at present, but software compatability is still a problem.

No company (including military) will ever jump straight to a new OS. its not worth the risk. i know of several military organisations that still run XP and 2000 - because its stable(ish)

Microsoft generally sponsor companies to take it on, then they distribute some free copies aroudn the web and turn a blind eye to licencing to get it "out there"

Windows 7 is a complete re-write of the OS, rather than Vista which was a hashed cobbled together of the best bits of NT4, XP and some other bespoke bits. It SHOULD be better. but you know it wont be.

If it is a clean install, it will delete your files. A viable solution would be to back up your data, boot from a CD or flash drive that has a disk partitioning tool and partition your hard-drive into two parts. Put Windows 7 on one partition, and Windows 8 on another. You can also run it inside of a virtual machine so that you don't have to do that, though. Use Google if you don't understand these terms.

The thing I like is that it draws the fire away from XP. The hackers will turn their attention on vista and win7 vulnerabilities.

I've stuck with XP, partly cos' I'm skint and partly cos' it works for me. I'm not bothered by bells and whistles.

To be honest I like Vista. Been using it since September last year and have had no problems with it.

No, because I'm using Open Suse (Linux). It it sometimes a pain to get certain things compatible, but at least it is secure and reliable. ( And Free!)
