No one can predict this. The EU could last 40 years and some big cities like London, Paris or Rome will likely be far too crowded for individual vehicles. It would be the individual countries to ban cars in certain city areas, though, not the EU. Even in the US a few central streets within a few cities are closed to car traffic.

But there are a lot of cities that would continue to have car traffic without problems.

no one will be able to afford to run a car in the near future, let alone 40 years.

i'll be retired by then, living in a villa(no where near a city) in a hot country so selfishly, i am not at all concerned.

It is not going to happen according to HM government and hopefully the EU will have disappeared into history by 2050

Brussels is rapidly increasing a status as one of Europe's must-see places, with its small town appeal, modern bars and restaurants, fantastic food, great nightlife, great buying, numerous museums, and other attractions including the diverse and interesting exhibitions and festivals structured there each year and today; with hotelbye , you may have the opportunity to see it. Brussels has changed into a Mecca of fashion, artwork, and design. While attracting more and more huge titles in global fashion to their growing buying districts, home-grown Belgian manufacturers are fast gaining international notoriety. Brussels, that wonderful town is just a hub for fashion, art, and Belgian lifestyle so; do not eliminate any prospect you have to go to it.

Generally speaking I see no problems with it. It is perfectly posssible to live in a city (and visit one) without a car. As long as the public transport is decent, fine.

Will they enable people to use alternative fuelled vehicles? At the moment we only ever hear about penalising people using conventional combustion engines. People can't afford to save for alternatives AND pay punitive taxes. I firmly believe that if alternatives were available and affordable, then a lot of people would use them.

It's only the bloody Telegraph, they are notoriously anti europe and love scaremongering. Take this with a truck load of salt.
Huh?

As usual the Torygraph's reporting on all things European is hopelessly biased. The plan is talking about banning conventionally fuelled cars, not electric or hydrogen fuelled. Petrol-driven cars will probably be a rarity by 2050 anyway.

[quote]:-

Its key goals by 2050 are:

* No more conventionally fuelled cars in cities;

* 40% use of sustainable low-carbon fuels in aviation; at least a 40% cut in shipping emissions;

* A 50% shift of medium distance inter-city passenger and freight journeys from road to rail and waterborne transport.

The document says that by 2050 the majority of medium-distance passenger journeys - those above about 300 kilometres (186 miles) - should be by rail.

More than half of road freight travelling more than 300 kilometres should move to rail or boat (30% by 2030).

I'm absolutely certain the MEPs will still be driven to their Brussels offices by luxury cars

Environmental taxes, congestion charges, airport taxes, fuel tax ... all of them are just taxes. Designed entirely to raise money for the exchequer. Like alcohol and cigarettes - tax is added using the excuse of doing us some good. But really, it's just to keep income tax rates lower

Time to ban the EU and slot the MEP's on the flag poles.
