Question:
I am a teacher. Should I lower a student's grade because he wears a Terrorist Scarf?

You know those terrorist scarves that Palestinians wear? This kid is like half Palestinian or something and wears the scarf every week. I really don't like it, but the problem is that he is a pretty good student. Anyway, i spoke to some of my colleagues and they're all progressive maoist, communists so, as i expected, they said that the scarf is a symbol of his heritage or "solidarity with the suffering of Palestinian people" or "Palestinian nationalism." One of my colleagues said that it's the same as if someone wore a scarf with the American flag on it. Can you believe that?!

I was appalled that he compared the greatest country ever, a country that's never committed any terrorism, to all those Palestinians that are just terrorists form birth.

Anyway, i want to lower this kids grade. I know its not right, but we have to stop these Terrorists from infiltrating the academics and spewing their Terrorist hate and lies. He wants to be a professor when he grows up. That's appropriate, isn't it? That way he can be with all his commie friends that talk about Palestinian's dying or starving or blah blah. yeah right.

Should i lower his grade so he has a harder time succeeding? I think i would do the country and Israel a great service by keeping this Terrorist sympathizer down.

As a teacher of 40 years I would advise you to TEACH. Students must be taught both sides of any controversial issue. Neither side is entirely right or wrong. From that point it is up to the individual to make up their own mind. Lowering a grade just because you do not believe with a student is wrong. I seriously doubt however that you are a teacher. I tend to think that you may be a student.

In the very first place, does your school have a dress code? If not, could you possibly propose one? Or, find out if in each class, a teacher could impose a dress code. It is in a way, just o get rid of the scarf. It is not fair to lower the grade for that reason especially if he is doing good in his standing. I would suggest that it is a teacher's responsibility to help mold the students to their betterment so we try or use our imagination on what we could do instead of lowering the deserving grade. Good luck dear teacher.

You cant discriminate against him that way. You have to be neutral. You cant discriminate against blacks for wearing African dress or Jewish kids when they wear a yarmalke, and so on. There is nothing to say this child has any terrorist ideas. The scarf is symbolic of the Palestinian struggle for human rights and freedom against oppression. I agree. The only so-called terrorists could be the militant wing of Hamas in Gaza Strip. You cannot blame this child for what Palestinians living in the occupied territories are doing. I cant believe you would change his grade knowing he has academic ability and interest in teaching. That would be illegal discrimination and they should sue you and the school district. The best way you can prevent him from becoming violent is to discuss the problems of the Palestinians. You are supposed to be a teacher.

You're not a teacher. There's nothing in this question that a "real" teacher would think let alone write or speak to his "colleagues" about. A kids' clothing is never part of his academic grade, doesn't effect it in any way. A teacher leaves his/her own political philosophy outside the classroom door. It's a teacher's job to guide not to judge. We may not agree with our students' political views but they're allowed to have them and to freely state them as long as they don't overtly threaten others and don't interfere with the learning process.

You are obviously racist, and a bad teacher and shouldn't post this question.

I don't report people, so you will have to #1 report yourself and give yourself up to the yahoo sheriff.

#2 send yourself a violation letter and pretend it came from yahoo.

After you have done that you can feel bad for a while and then come back and ask some more questions.

As a teacher, you must confess before the board to these bad thoughts and ask their forgiveness.

If his grades are sturdy then bypass him. reducing them won't gain your purpose despite which would be or make you experience greater effectual. After 9/11 they have been greater huge-unfold than ever and this usa has basically standard it. keeping their emotions to themselves. you have the comparable emotions as many people do whilst it is composed of those from the middle east. bypass the newborn, get him out of your type and enable somebody else have the headache.

Its just a scarf. What will be the kids be banned from wearing next? If it had a direct terrosist meaning that scared the other kids and teachers, then the distraction should be removed. But it is part of the culture of a group of people that are not all terrorists. I think you give him some slack. Americans value our freedoms and the terrorists hate our freedom. Send a message to the kid that he has resonable freedom in this country.

Your sure going to get a lot of answers on this one.

The answer is NO. Do not change his rightful grade.

You will have to talk wjith his parents with the boy predent.

Exolain to them that if everybody starts wearing a scarf that

stands for a cause , relligion or whatever that it can cause

a disruption in the school. Imagine if some girl came to school

with no top and her breasts were bare saying we don't wear

a top according to my religion.

After school is out he can wear whatever he wants.

You really need to do some research. That scarf is a cultural symbol, not completely a terrorist symbol.

It is the same as wearing an American flag scarf.

Is the kid (or his parents) a terrorist sympathizer? Do they want to kill Americans? If you grade him based on his clothing, and you're not at a fashion school, then you're being fascist and are no better than the terrorists.

one i don't think your a teacher two if you are this is a project that your doing for you class three if this is how you really feel then you have to answer to god, i am not one to judge. my opinion about what you wrote is that if you feel the way you feel then you should not be teaching, and may be you need a history lesson. if you feel that way about him i wounder how you feel about other cultures and what you have done to them their are americans who hate this country and tried to do things to so how can you tell those american terrorists apart so before you judge anyone you need to look at yourself ask wounder why you might be racist or a terrorist yourself, while you at it you need to ask god for forgiveness and to take the hate you have in you heart away and if someone of another culture did you wrong you need to forgive them. this is only my opinion

no, that's racial profiling. If the scarf is against the school dress code send him to the principal's office. If not leave the kid alone. Not every Palestinian is a terrorist and it is wrong of you to judge him as such just because of how he looks or what he wears.

You should not judge this kid just because he wears a Terrorist scarf. Ok pretend i was a teacher and a kid said I was ugly. As a teacher, you should accept your students equally.

PS I would be worried but....

I would have a conference with his parents and talk to them about maybe they would have somthing to say

are you crazy, your opinion is clearly biast, youre very judemental, the scarf is a fashion trend, and even if he were wearing it to symphatize for the palestenians, america is a country which takes pride in its freedom of expression, he is not offending anybody or inflicting harm, he is just representing himself, its also important to mention taht how he presents himself is totally different from his performance in the class room, think about it....

Of course, he's a terrorist-in-training. Of course, you must never admit WHY you are lowing his grade. Just insist that he doesn't work hard enough.

He must be taught to mind his betters.

do not dare penalize a student for something he believes, particularly as his belief has NOTHING to do with his schoolwork.

how about this: we will report you and they will lower your pay or better yet, boot you out for your stupidity.

incidentally i do not believe that you are what you say you are.
2010-02-26 14:03:42 UTC
you can lower his grade only if you quit your profession and admit that you are a bigot to all in the world!
