I'm helping my sister with a short essay she is doing, what is a good current event/issue that she could write about? Also give some of your opinions on how you would solve or bring an end to the issue.

I recommend that you watch PBS's News Hour (unbiased news report) at 6 p.m. CST (7 p.m. EST) and take your pick. Without knowing how old your sister and you are, one cannot know where your interests lie.
Or you could peek at a newspaper (McDonald's Restaurants usually have one for its customers to read) and glance through the various headlines, Letters to the Editor, and the different sections.
You should probably choose a topic that would have an effect in your lives, such as economy-related news, the reforms for the nation's for-profit health insurance that gives all Americans affordable access (see whitehouse.gov or healthcare.gov), the ongoing war in Afghanistan that is set to end next year, the quality of your local school system (and the GOP's drastic cuts in our nations education that has allowed us to fall behind other nations' in science and math skills), etc.

Try writing about Serena Williams who made the 19th WTA. This may encourage her to do her best in her life.
