"SHUT DOWN THE INTERNET WITHIN 5 YEARS"? What the...?

1. This bill wouldn't give the President the power to "shut down the Internet", just the portion of the network located within the US. 2. This is the most effective way we currently have of preventing a sophisticated, coordinated Cyber-terrorism attack on our network infrastructure. If Al Qaeda ever managed to recruit just a couple decent hackers (most Muslims suck with computers), they could potentially screw us up in a big, BIG way. Imagine all our financial records being wiped out, our communications disabled, the safety measures of our power plants over-ridden and our missile safeguards compromised... It seems like Science Fiction, but I assure you; it's completely possible. No computer or network is completely secure. Any system can be compromised. Consider this to be Star Wars Missile Defense for the Internet. I'm no fan of expansive, invasive Government; but I prefer this to Al Qaeda sending us back to the 18th Century with a couple keystrokes. And for the record, I'm not just saying this as a parrot for the Democrat Party. I would support ANY President having this power. Bush, Obama, Clinton, McCain, Palin...whoever. The President is responsible for defending the US and this is the best way we have of protecting our tech-reliant nation in the event of an emergency. EDIT: To the fellow quoting Benjamin Franklin, Ben was a smart guy, but he never foresaw anything like the Internet, nor how much we would come to depend on it. This isn't a sacrifice of rights for safety. Its just safety. Period.

Elton John is a mediocre-voiced singer who has the talent to write music and lyrics that others can and do sing much better than he does! That is his only claim to fame. Does that mean he has the right to tell the rest of us what we should listen to? Or how we should do it? NO!

All his fame gives him is more people to hear his opinions!

My father thought 60's music was rubbish, and that the Beatles were a bunch of 'yobs' who would disappear in a couple of years. My mother thought that TV and Video would destroy peoples musical creativity as too much emphasise was on what the singer looked like or how 'good' the visuals were.

Now I myself think the noise coming from my young neighbours stereo could be called anything but music!

I like my parents before me can't get my opinions published as HE can and who would really care what I thought! Why let what he thinks get you wound up!!!

Music will always change, the way it's created and presented will always change and the best will become tomorrows classics.

The internet isn't just about music........... I wouldn't be answering this question if it was! lol

I think it all has to do with your criteria on what genre of music is good. I myself prefer French pop/rock and I myself am an Elton John fan. I think that the quality of vocalists has slipped since the 70's and so has orgininality. But that's just MY opinion. As for the stuff about the internet and music; I like being able to download songs from different albums from online sources and being able to pick and choose the songs I like without having to buy an entire album...especially if I only like one song on the album. And without the internet I probably would never have gotten into the French musicals and French artists I now like. So, maybe it's only in certain parts of the world that the music industry is lacking in creativity...but as far as I can see it has been a good thing for fans of music and for those who want to find other inspirations and sounds.

I think Elton is just starting to show his age now. lol

People SHOULD be able to make music in their bedrooms and release it online - it's a fantastic way for musicians to get their music out there into the world. The greedy record companies will probably soon become a thing of the past.

I heard it on the Today program. The BBC get a lot of their news from the Sun. He's full of his own importance. Perhaps with the Internet they might not be another Elton John, we can only hope!

Totally disagree with EJ. The internet is possibly the greatest way of democratising music. Now you can upload your stuff on to youtube etc and go direct to the public without going through expensive intermediaries like agents and record companies. If you have access to a simple webcam you can podcast a concert for free to anyone who's prepared to listen. The internet is the way forward for popular music- it can reach directly to the people, as Sandi Thom et al have shown. Then you can decide whether to go and see them in live concert because you enjoy their stuff, not b'cause Simon Cowell says so or the record companies agree to distribute/make available their stuff!

Elton's talking out o the top his wig again. What he needs to understand is that the music industry urgently needs to modernise. Perhaps if cds are a thing of the past then why aren't the stars not marketing other merchandise with their brand name on it?

He's just talking out of his hat.

It has little to do with the internet and much MORE to do with the "generalized business model" that all the music labels gravitate towards.

Businesses want sure things. They don't like to gamble with their potential profits or waste money on acts that may not be AS successful(they might still BE successful) as other acts.

As a result they are producing cookie cutter bands and sounds.

But NONE of that has ANYTHING to do with the internet.

But Peter O... you're sat in front of your computer right now.... there seem to be a lot of pots and kettles around these days.

Elton is being a fool. He's not my wife now Dave.

I've noticed these past few years that Elton believes he's reached God status. Despite some homophobic and childish name calling in this thread, Elton is a legend and comtributed much to music. Doesn't matter whether you like his music, his career has been huge.

Sadly it seems to have almost made him into someone who then thinks that his opinion on matters outside song creation and performance means something more than the average person... it doesn't.

It isn't the internet that is killing music. It's the music industry. What does Elton have to say about manufactured bands? What about the huge crowd of artists that are here one day and gone tomorrow, half the people (I'm being generous when I can half!) can't even play an instrument!

The industry has transformed bands as a method of creating money, when they have been used up, they are thrown away, no promotion no nothing and move onto the next.

We have these diabolical shows on tv run by industry bosses that do nothing for music. They aren't there to spot talent, they are there to make money.

If Elton had a bit of common sense he'd have mention this long before the internet came along.

The Music Industry Itself is responsible for the state of music.

The Radio Stations are a part of it also.

Music Industry too Conservative.

They are a business.

They seem to go for sure things.

That is why everything sounding the same.

In the early 70s music was good because everyone was stoned out of their minds. Or maybe thats why it sounded good?
2007-08-03 08:36:30 UTC
GEEZ! I live in Minnesota ( in the middle of North America) and even I know you can't believe anything that the Sun says!
2007-08-02 20:53:43 UTC
He is right.

The quality of music has completly tanked. Bands come and go quicker now than in the '80's.
2007-08-02 20:54:54 UTC
you have to consider the source. sure Elton can sing, but he prefers to be down with men. How crazy is that?
