Everything all comes down to why we should say sorry when all "we" were trying to do from what I understand and in a very simple form was to help save these non-full blooded aboriginal children from communities that abused them as our government are still doing today for children that are abused regardless of race. It’s not a sorry for anything else ‘White Australia’ has done to the aboriginal race but basically a sorry for trying to help all those years ago. I personally don't understand the aboriginal psyche and culture as much as I would like and I'm sure that a lot of aboriginals don't understand ours and what we are trying and have tried to do for them. We both must be educated of each others culture and perspective and meet somewhere in the middle before any reconciliation will happen. Reconciliation is another issue and saying sorry or admitting guilt for something I don't feel I did is irrelevant and it is something I don't want to do. I think he should have not apologised.....

Lelalie, you are on the right track.

It's no business of his, whether he be PM or sweeper at the Lodge.

There is no difference between when the government of the day had to save Aborigional children for their good and today, when they are doing the same thing in NT, where Aboriginal kids are being raped by family at 8 and 12 yeaers of age, and beaten by fathers and family.

Why is Mr Rudd apologising for what the government did 80 years ago, when they are still doing the same thing today, for the same reasons, and saving young kids from rape, bashing and abuse?

I can't believe this PM we have elected. This is the worst case of double standards in the history of Australian politics ever!!

If the first act of this new government is to pull this stunt while still perpetrating the crimes they are supposedly apologising for is any example of what we are in for, heaven help this great country from here onwards.

What some megolamaniacs will do to get into the history books is just staggering. Power hungry is one thing.... pure stupidity is another case altogether!!!!

WHAT YOU JUST SAID MAKES ME ALMOST PHYSICALLY SICK.

It's because of views such as your own that the Howard government refused to say sorry. Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their homes. Some parents were told their children were dead. Imagine if you were have a tough time and someone took your children and told you they were dead, just so they'd live a 'better life'. You'd tell them they had no right without your consent.

Saying sorry is not about anyone personally taking responsibility for what was done, since it was so long ago and those people are no longer around. Saying sorry is acknowledging that what happened was wrong. It's saying we feel sorry for the way you were treated, and know that it can never be repeated.

Saying sorry is also in order to move foward. It was the fault of the European Australians that the Aboriginals were treated the way they were, and since then they have suffered even more. Life expectancy is 17 years less for them, when they supposedly our equals! Things need to be changed, and saying sorry means that we can move on from the past and help them build a better future.

It's arrogant people like you who refuse to put yourselves in someone elses shoes who vote people like Howard in.

You make me sick.

I said it yesterday and I'll say it again today:

To the Indigenous people of Australia I AM SORRY.

You seem to forget who was there first and show respect for their culture.

This was not something that happened centuries ago but in the last few decades

Dearie, I don't recall your name in the speech?! Perhaps you could you do with some history lessons as it appears that you have missed out on that. No dear, you obviously don't understand the completely racist policies used to divide and conquer, or to provide a cheap labour source or the attempt to breed out the ABoriginal population. We understand your white psyche, we've had it forced down our throats for generations, we don't expect you to understand ours as your ancestors did their best to wipe us out or deny us our right to self determination and our own culture.

I'm sure you apologise all the time to your friends or strangers for things you didn't do or didn't mean to do, sorry about your dad dying, sorry I missed your party, sorry I couldn't make it, sorry about your cat dying, sorry I didn't mean to hurt your feelings....? sound familiar?

You strange little distorted views on 'trying to help' only highlight the true level of ignorance displayed by most white australians, I guess thats why so many you get so up in arms about saying sorry.

Believe me, a quick read of the newspapers in this country will show you that child abuse/murder, rape and wife beating are well and truly part and parcel of white culture. I try not to stereotype white australians, but with the spate of child murders and rapes committed by them I can't help but think that there is something seriously wrong with a lot of you.

your reconciliation in the midle....is an excuse to cover your reluctancy for the apology. the history is clear, we do not need to study on this matter. aboringal people have been inappropriately treated. as long as human being, apology for guilty and abusement is a matter of justice, fairness and morality. why so reluctant to do a generous apology (this one is not that generous at all)?

a guilty man felt no guilty, and played his own justice, that only happened during the colonial time.

Because he is a presidents, (or PM?) these people do stuff on behalf of the whole country, you can't say I don't want to pay taxes; why don't politicians keep their tax opinion to themselves!

You guys were criminals who were deported (lol from your home country) to there, I' not surprised when I see you get outraged when you see someone more sensible among you admits you made a mistake and apologizes.
