Isn't it tragic that it's acceptable in Eritrea for these women to be soldiers and fight in wars but can't make decisions about their own bodies? So, a woman can wield a rifle but not a plough!

For most of us in the west the choice is clear.... ....BUT....These people come from a totally different culture.....have totally different value systems.... face often horrible fates if they break with local taboos ..... I have known women to be killed

Obviously we would never butcher a sweet young girl with a broken coke bottle .... it is unthinkable.....yet it is done daily in many parts of Africa....in northern Africa they cripple healthy children because it makes them more successful at begging..... riots have broken out because a Muslim women competed in a beauty contests. Her life was threatened.....if a young girl does not marry a man, a total stranger, she has been given to by her family they can kill her to preserve the family honor....... advising someone to break with their culture can be a death sentence.....

Leaving their culture is usually economically impossible..... and terrifying even if they can afford it.....

What would I do?..... obviously I would encourage her to break with tradition.....I would help her as best I could.....but I would not punish her if she fails to follow my advice

All circumcision of children including male circumcision should be an international criminal offence. This is on the grounds that a person needs to be an adult to decide such a ghastly operation. It should have an "age of consent" of at least 18 or even more. I feel sorry for the women in primitive societies and religions who support this biblical horror. In Africa women come under pressure to have this done to their children, this should be a criminal offence. I advise them to refuse

they will probably end up doing as their mothers did

the scary thing is that people with these traditions and beliefs are moving in large numbers to british towns

these disgusting pracitices are always put down to tradition and change happens slowly ...so these women will do to their daughters what was done to them ......and on it goes

It seems they are recieving some good advice as it is; don't mutilate your baby girls, don't continue the practise of restrictive stitching, plough your own furrow. I just hope they all take that good advice.

My God, I thought such things were banned. If not then they should be. how barbaric.

because of where these women live, my advice to them would be useless. they will do as their mothers have done.
