Good question.
Here is a play (fiction) of what could have happened that gave origin to that news article.
Gerry: "Inspector Amaral ?"
Amaral: "Yes... who's this ?"
Gerry: "It's Gerry... you remember ?!!!"
Amaral: "What do you want ?"
Gerry: "Look... we do not stand a chance in hell of winning a civil action against you especially because you have those two or three pieces of info. you're keeping to yourself should we one day decide to sue you."
Amaral: "Yes ??..... And... ???"
Gerry: "What if we started, little by little, admitting that you you were right all along ? -- Would that change anything ?!"
Amaral: "Well, it certainly would help.... Start to declare publicly that I was right in pursuing my line of enquiry and we will see !"
Gerry: "That's great news, Inspector... Speak to you soon !"
Gerry: " Kate.... Kate.... KATE ! Phone that newspaper and call one of their reporters to our house."
This could be what gave origin to Kate's remark !

"michael w" -- Michael, be a bit more interesting and challenging with your comments and tell us precisely WHAT the Portuguese Police should have done... Or do you really know what you're talking about ? Have you read both sides of the story, Portuguese and English ? Have you read Amaral's book ? - Obviously you have not.... HOW can you possible make the statements of fact that you make?
Those photos that you constantly plaster this board with of the woman with make up HAVE BEEN PROVED TO BE FAKES.... probably fakes by YOU for all we know. Be specific, my friend.... and objective and most of all interesting with your contributions. Those are boring !!!
Amaral's book has sold thousands upon thousands around Europe. Have you actually held a copy of the book in your hands ?
