Cuba has been contrlled by Fidel Castro for 49yrs and now his brother Raul Catro has been named president - this does not sound like communism (power to the people) but dictatorship (you do as i say) - Is the West and Russia not even going to question the validity of this ??? what are your opinions ?

In the scheme of things Cuba is not important, now that Russia is not a world power looking for domination, they couldn't care less.

The Americans will make noises, but again because Russia are not interested, neither is the US.

The problem that is in waiting, is that if Cuba has close ties with Venezuela. he Americans would then take a keener interest in Cuban affairs.

As for social progress in Cuba, I think that Raul Castro is more likely to attempt to liberalise the country, maybe not as far as extending the one party state, but to try to improve economic relations with the west.

It astounds me how the US in particular think they have the right to go in and sort out another country who they feel in their opinion are not doing the right thing - their arrogance knows no bounds. In the 50's thanks to the US, Cuba was corrupt beyond belief, then, Fidel Castro steps in - throws out the yanks and reforms his country. Some would call his country a dictatorship some would say highly organised and efficient. In retaliation, the States make several murder attempts on Castro and impose trade embargos - all because they didn't get their own way. Castro and his country stand strong and keep the US out of their country. Pehaps if Blair had stood strong and not believed the US lies about Iraq we would not have been dragged into the mess we are in now with our country being a prime target for terrorists. It is not for Russia or the West to decide how Cuba should be run - it is for them to decide. Pity that we don't want to "sort out" Zimbabwe isn't it where millions of people are being tortured - while their president lords it up laughing in the face of the rest of the world.

It is a dictatorship. Cuba has no freedom whatsoever. I've never been to Cuba but my fiance has, and everyone complains (in private, of course), about how bad the situation is over there. Under Batista there was a lot of corruption, but things were still better at that time than they are now. Cubans aren't even allowed inside the hotels or some shopping malls. Everything is almost in ruins. I think that the only people that can change the situations are Cubans on the island, but they seem to have accepted things the way they are. Its a shame...

Russia and China both have long abandoned Cuba, letting it drift off on it's own; they could care less who runs the country.

Fidel's Cuba rule has always been "Do as I say". Castro's very lucky opponents were sent off to prison, lucky opponents were shot on sight, and the unlucky opponents were slowly tortured by grisly means till dead.

Word of his brutality quickly spread amongst the land, so if on sunny hot days, Fidel says it was raining...you broke out umbrellas or faced wondering if you were very lucky, lucky or unlucky.

Fidel knows deep in his heart the majority of Cubans (and his military) pretty much want his last breath drawn; his lust for power has crippled Cuba and brought misery and impoverished squalor to it's people.

Raul, I assume, also feels this is necessary; it's getting harder each day to keep Cuba alive as it is. Until Fidel dies, it's really anyone's logical guess of Cuba's future.

One thing IS for certain: Cuba can't much longer last as an independent "Communist" nation, just 90 miles south of Key West, Florida, USA.

Something's GOTTA give, and I don't look for the USSR or China (both countries have their own burdensome problems to deal with) to throw out any life lines anytime soon.

Well, the old guy is still there, maybe behind the walls. For me it doesn't matter. Fidel is dying, and Raul doesn't have much of Castro's "charisma". In five to ten years, both will be goners, and Cuba will have to move to a different direction. Time is the indicator.

Wow...there's a stretch. some thing that befell in a tinpot third international county almost a 0.5 century in the past in the time of a time even as each and each and every south American and imperative American usa except value Rica changed into ruled by utilizing lots of the most ruthless facisti regimes provided that Hitler. the US, who ought to were the organic best buddy of those negative exploited human beings sided with those accurate wing weasels because they were 'anti-communist' and were satisfied to take Uncle's money to stay that way. Had the US tossed Bastita out on his blood soaked *** Fidel ought to not in any respect had lengthy gone into the mountains, not in any respect ought to have were given in mattress with Russia and also you would nonetheless be residing in Havana. attempting to snivel out a case that Barack Obama is yet another Castro is the 2d dumbest difficulty I ever heard. Dock the quick-boat Manny...'ys sprung a significant leak!

Yes isnt it strange family members getting so involved with a leadership of a country. The West is the same.

America - the same, Bush senior, Bush junior,

Bush brother.

Clinton - husband, wife.

Kennedys - father, brothers.

Almost like a Royal family - power being passed down. Don't think it is very healthy to keep having family members with their hands on the reigns of power in any country.

of course its a dictatorship but the west knows it already and Putin not going to bring it up as hes doing the same anyway, see him back in about 5 years. but hopefully his stepping down might empower the people of Cuba to finally rid themselves of those self-righteous Castro brothers. although watching red ken singing his praises on TV this morning was sickening in the extreme

Seems to be a matter for the Cuban people to decide, not international interlopers.
