There has long been a debate about whether he got the line wrong.

It only works if he said "One small step for A man - One giant leap for mankind" but there is no 'A' on the recordings and not enough space for there to have been one that might have got lost in the static.

Let's be charitable and agree that he said 'A' but that it must have been run together with the preceding word. It is possible as he was too busy to worry about precise diction and the audio quality was poor enough to have disguised the sound.

He was a brave man, no matter what.

It was confused by the poor communication system. After eliminating the noise, it has been found that "It's one small step for 'a' man, ..."

I believe he said, or was meant to say A man. But actually 'for man (kind)' has more impact don't you think.
