Is America the only first world country that still uses the death penalty?

No - IS (ISIS) use the death penalty usually they make a video of it and post it online somewhere or other.

Death Penalty stats worldwide

At least in America, because it's a democracy, the people can hold a debate on the issue, which is exactly what's happening in some states - either get rid of the death penalty altogether or else improve the method of execution.

Americans have their own democratic ways of doing stuff. What's the rush? Everyone must first be allowed to have their say this way or that. And that is going to take a very long time. The group which wants to keep the death penalty is probably far more powerful politically and so forth than those who wish to get rid of the death penalty.

Here in UK we argued about getting rid of the death penalty for generations - yet everyone has this daft idea that it was an overnight done deal when in fact it was nothing of the kind. And just like bringing slavery to an end it took generations of folk to stand up and be counted on the issue of ending the death penalty.

There are those of us, moi, who believe that every single human being can be reformed, so why not try that? Yet at the same time I despair of how the law enforcement authorities go about protecting the public from known murderers - especially those of the imported kind.

Yes, even here in UK the debate continues, even though the death penalty was abolished a long time ago. There are those who want to bring it back, but only for murder, so they say. We'll see about that.

Not so much, and less as it goes, because we have

become more educated by the facts that these worse types of criminals would rather go to extremes and die for it, then be locked away in prisons for the rest of their lives without privledges and only getting the basic needs to survive as a human and live it out that way. So, we don't give them what they want. We give them the corporal punishment of never being allowed the freedom to do anything evil again..That is why we have less trouble with it here than in most countries that do that, because these criminals don't get killed over a failed attempt if we can help that. Because, they don't really care if they live or die by the choices they make. They are miserable either way, and only try and force others into joining in on that with them, imo.

Yes, basically you can separate the US, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan into Developed Military-Societies.

The rest of the 1st World favors Civilization, and in a Civilized-society you don't have a Death-Penalty, because there's too much collateral-damage.

it depends on the state you live in. united states no mater what state you talk about rarely uses the death penalty. my guess about 1% or less of all people convicted of a death penalty worthy crime will actually receive it so it is almost extinct even in the states that do use the death penalty. they only use the death penalty for crimes related to murder completion. situations of attempted murder with no actual lives lost will result in life imprisonment sentence as a maximum penalty. most states i think do not have death penalty legalized so i think it is banned in most states across our country. i live in california where death penalty is still legal. i actually voted against the death penalty on the ballot for the 2012 election because i do not trust the system. i am not against the death penalty but i do think our judicial system is partially racist or biased therefore i am not a big fan of encoring execution until i am confident that the system no longer tolerates the abuse. i think you might be right that we are the only first world that has the death penalty in use. now the united states can order death penalty on war criminals so whatever country or situation we go to war with so example like osama bin laden or terrorists we find stuff like people on americas most wanted stuff like that can get death penalty even though they are not united states citizens. so that means that death penalty is enforced on non US citizens for crimes against our government is how it is set up basically so there is an exception to the situation also for gang bangers and etc so anyone posing a threat to our society. most of the world legalizes the death penalty. first worlds are NOT a majority of society. 3rd worlds are the majority of the world and from what i understand they all legalize the death penalty as well as 2nd world societies. now 1st worlds might have a lot of land but are not necessarily a large amount of the people. i am not sure if i have answered your question correctly. i don't think death penalty is very effective i think it is used as a sense of revenge. now that is a natural human feeling wanting to kill a criminal who deserves to be penalized so i am not really saying they are bad to think like this. but there is huge racial disparity in how it is applied in our country in that ethnic minorities have highest percentage of being killed as well as people with low socioeconomic levels. so it is not perfectly fair. america has the highest crime rate in the world in terms of prison population both by number or percentage either way we are worse then other societies. so anyways we have higher murder rates then most first worlds only russia has a higher murder rate but not crime rate overall then our country. you can also get the death penalty for ordering murder meaning if you tell people you will murder others and the acts are completed even if you did not kill the person you will get the death penalty for making the orders. so asking people to kill for you is literally a crime and can give you the death penalty for that as well so real acts of violence does not actually need to occur on your part but if you ask others to do it that is enough for your penalty as well. other countries in third worlds use the death penalty for NON violent crimes as well so that is a different situation so anyways at least america understands to use this violent penalty for at least cases that are hopefully deserving of such actions.

The death penalty should be expanded to include not just murderers but also rapists, child molesters, and repeat felony offenders like gang members and drug dealers. If there is one thing abortion and islam have taught me its that its not that important for everyone to be alive.

Even countries who have extradition treaties with the USA will refuse to extradite someone who faces the death penalty.

There are countless countries where you can end up in shallow grave, result is the same death penalty or not, your still dead
