well when I drove into Workington this morning there was plenty of army presence- they can't do anything about the bridges until the water levels drop and that could take days - all the emergency services are doing a great job and many of them are volunteers and we are all very very grateful to them - to the west of the county is sheer devastation and our infrastructure is destroyed. - it will take more than months to get over this and some may never recover - an awful time here.
I really don't think anyone really appreciates just how bad it is unless they have experienced it first hand. I am very lucky I still have my home - the bridges and roads being out is inconvenient and difficult but nothing compared to what some people are having to endure

You think troops should be building bridges instead of fighting wars? Ask the squaddies and see which one of those they signed up to do.
Instead of putting yet more strain on the Armed forces. Why not contact some private civil engineering firms to get the bridges repaired / rebuilt and get some money flowing back through the economy.

the army were there helping the rescue. Not all of the army are in Afghanistan.
This is another unfounded complaint about the response to the Cumbrian floods I'm afraid.

A lot of truth in your statement. But surely there are training and Territorial units of Royal engineers who would welcome this opportunity to hone their bridge building skills. Any such bridges would be built with the usual proffesionalism and skills of the R.E. s
