Why is it only western countries that help Africa fight the Ebola outbreak?

USA, UK, France... gave respectively around 500, 280 and 70 millions € to help western africa to fight Ebola. Other countries are far behind (China gave 5 million $). Plus all the health worker that are helping in these countries risking their live are almost all from western countries (I heard there is a lot from Cuba too). Why some countries, not the richest on earth (except USA maybe), have like a "duty" of helping other countries where most of "rich" countries don't? Countries from the arabic peninsula are super rich, China too, and they have lot of economic exchange with Africa (lot of chinese in Africa) but they are not helping when they are in need.

I'm really glad that we (western countries) are helping them, and think we could do more, but I don't get why it's not an international mobilisation and that we are the only ones helping.

Your missing the big picture here. The western powers do not give anything to the African countries to fight Ebola or anything else unless there is a payback (and there is, and its much bigger than any relief so far)

The US has established "Africom"; their miltary command centre and bases in small african countries that all happen to have the usual fare lusted after by big American business (yet is never paid for)

Oil, rare earth metals (found in electronic such as cell phones ) goold, silver, tin ore and just about every resource long since mined out of existence back in the US.

Ebola (this "strain") was recognized last year in late 2013 in the surrounding countries. If the US and other world "leaders" wanted to do something, why not then?

The answer is the knowledge wasn't expedient enough to use in a fear campagn then, as they were already pitching the Ukrainian "crisis".

They got everyone juiced up with the evil Russian empire now lets keep the ball rolling with another horror threat to jusity a lockdown when the economy goes bust.

It's all about a bio threat now to strip away more liberties and freedoms.

Because the idea that as a society/country, you should feel compassionate and take efforts to ease the suffering of others in the world is a pretty Western notion-it sticks out as a WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) value.

Which is to say China and the Gulf countries aren't going to lose any sleep if a million Africans drop dead of Ebola tomorrow. The Chinese may have to rewrite some contracts to shift their business interests in the region to the survivors, but that's not that hard.

Never underestimate how many things we in the West view as fundamental human values are really just Western values, ergo, not applicable to the rest of the world.

Because the Western countries run this world, they have done this and been the 'Great Powers' or 'Superpowers' for over 200 years. So, it's tradition for them to act....the duty comes with being great powers and the world leaders.

Other earth countries (even if a few are rich) are considered still 'developing' and weak and not leaders, not yet capable of acting.

Europe and North America have the best and the most resources and technical know-how. Cuba and Israel do also.

The PRC is not around to aid those who they seek to conquer within 100 years.
